Chemistry
Stage 1
Full year or Semester
10 or 20 credits
Course Overview
In first semester, this course explores the materials in the world around us. Students will learn about the periodic table, atoms and molecules and how they form materials. We will look at nanomaterials and explore forces holding things together and pushing things apart. We will finish the semester finding out about quantities of things in chemistry and learning to identify, name and draw hydrocarbon substances.
In second semester, students will learn about mixtures and solutions, and we will explore the energy changes taking place in chemical reactions. We will also learn about the chemical reactions that take place in water and learn how to analyse chemicals to identify them or work out how much of them are present. Finally, we will learn how mobile phone and laptop batteries work.
